Recent years have seen the most significant shifts in cannabis usage since bans the 1920s. An impressive 11 states in America alone have legalised cannabis on the back of health, tax, and regulatory benefits, with more looking set to follow. Even in locations where cannabis is still a no-go, it’s hallucinogen-free counterpart CBD is making significant shifts in the American healthcare system.
But, we know what you’re thinking. What does this mean for UK usage? As the largest producer and exporter of medical marijuana over the last twenty years, you’d assume laws here were also undergoing significant changes. Yet, the UK remains one of the most anti-cannabis nations going. While some limited medical marijuana cases were legalised in 2018, cannabis and its growth, distribution, or possession remain class B issues, with prison terms of up to 14 years.
Despite this, CBD is now legal on the UK market due to THC levels that are lower than 0.2%. This alone is opening up a wealth of ever-evolving health benefits, including suspected links with pain relief, athletic performance, decreased risks of certain cancers, and even improved brain functioning to avoid Alzheimer’s.
But, UK law continues to make the growth and purchase of even CBD seeds confusing, so where exactly are we getting our seeds right now, and which are the best options on the market?
Plenty of European countries are experiencing lax cannabis laws right now, with many becoming forerunners in the race for CBD and cannabis distribution. That makes them critical contenders for UK CBD seeds.
The Netherlands is perhaps the most notable option here as the world’s second-largest cannabis exporter. Already, they’re responsible for the first and largest medical marijuana export into the UK, and suppliers here also provide top-quality CBD cannabis seeds. Bulgaria also deserves mention here. As home to Europe’s largest CBD producer, Dragonfly Biosciences, this destination also provides almost unfounded seed-buying opportunities.
What Are The Different Types Of Cannabis Seeds Available?
Obviously, there’s all manner of CBD cannabis seeds on the market, but specific strain differences aside (we’ll get to those later), CBD seeds are a wide and varied bunch. To stay on the right side of the law and make sure they’re buying what they need, UK-based CBD suppliers start their buying journey by considering seed differences and priorities such as –
Feminised seeds
By guaranteeing female plants, feminised seeds eliminate uncertainty, streamline growing processes, and guarantee crop cultivation. This ensures that even small growing efforts reap substantial rewards.
Autoflowering seeds
Autoflowering seeds develop plants that automatically flower with age, without the light and heat sources that other plants rely on. This makes growth easier to manage, as well as ensuring results in as little as ten weeks, and ensuring growth works on small scales.
High CBD seeds
Cannabis seeds high in CBD are a central area of focus for UK growers, producing as they do plants with THC as low as 0.3% compared with as much as 20% CBD content. Seeds like these remain well within UK laws surrounding the growth of industrial cannabis dependent on THC levels that can’t be any higher than that 0.3% figure. This, mixed with the other priorities mentioned, makes for even UK-friendly seed purchase and growth at all times.
The Top 5 Cannabis Seeds High In CBD Available As Chosen By The CBD Supplier
Here at The CBD Supplier, we make it our business to know the best options for our UK market. We produce quality CBD products across the board, and we do so by always knowing the best seeds available. With the above fundamentals in mind, our favourites at the moment include –
#1 – Medical Mass CBD seeds
Medical Mass CBD seeds are relatively new to the market and are primarily available in an Indica strain. Perhaps the most notable benefit of these feminised, autoflowering seeds is an equal production of CBD and THC, which dramatically boosts the medical benefits available in this strain.
Growth of this seed is easy and manageable for even indoor growers thanks to yield heights of no more than 60–100cm and flowering periods of just 7-8 weeks for fast results that are hard to beat.
#2 – Euphoria
The anxiety-beating social focus of the Euphoria strain makes it a leading medical contender. This, paired with high CBD-cultivating genetics from both Indica and Sativa strains makes for one of the most famous CBD-rich varieties of all. Even better, a high-energy experience means that Euphoria plants are ideal for medical use with even daytime needs.
Again, growth of these plants is relatively easy, with 8-week high-yield flowering periods and heights of 100–140cm.
#3 – Amnesia Autoflowering CBD
Amnesia Autoflowering CBD might not sound like the most reassuring medical option, but this autoflowering, feminised and CBD-rich seed is most definitely worth market attention right now. A Sativa-dominant hybrid of Amnesia CBD and Early Amnesia CBD, this offering provides the best of both worlds for all medical users. Lower THC content than other strains mentioned means that this is undoubtedly the seed to consider for keeping a smile on your face all day and even finding outside inspiration.
As you can guess from the name, this seed is also cultivated with easy growth in mind. Its hybrid makeup means that Amnesia Autoflowering CBD seeds include dense branching structures that make for vegetative development of as much as 100g per plant. Growth, too, is incredibly adaptable from these seeds, with outdoor plants growing to as high as 1.70m, while indoor options will rarely exceed the 1m mark.
#4 – White Widow Autoflowering CBD
Derived from a White Widow XXL Autoflowering and an Auto CBD, this autoflowering top Widow selection offers bearable effects that make it ideal for medical use. With a balanced mixture of Indica, Sativa, and Ruderalis strains, this plant contains THC levels of just 5%, alongside CBD levels that easily double that.
It is worth noting, though, that growth with this option is slightly more complicated than the other seeds mentioned. This plant’s habit to ‘stretch’ means that space is of the essence. Still, an autoflowering tendency means that crops are still relatively easy to come by here, with dense and thick buds typically growing as standard.
#5 – Stress Killer Automatic CBD
Last but not least, we have the aptly named Stress Killer. This autoflowering strain combines genetics from Lemon Haze, Juanita la Lagrimosa, and Ruderalis, and is specifically targeted towards providing users with a functional and focused headspace. In fact, these seeds yield some of the most focus-producing CBD benefits on the market right now. This is fantastic for easing worries and, as you guessed it, keeping stress at bay.
Harvest times here are probably the longest on this list but still come in at a pretty manageable 11 weeks. Other than that, growth of just 90-140 cm indoors or 110-160cm outside make this another easy option for indoor or outside growers looking for high-yielding cannabis seeds high in CBD.
Indica and Sativa: The difference between the two
The two main strains of cannabis are Sativa and Indica. There is some debate as to what has caused the physical differences between the strains with some suggesting that humans were responsible for breeding different varieties. In contrast, others point to natural evolving adaptations and geographic isolation.
Cannabis Indica
Indica plants are short and bushy with broad, dark green leaves. They have a woody (not fibrous) stalk and grow more quickly than Sativa plants. The plant originated in the Middle East, in countries such as Pakistan, Tibet and Afghanistan. Indica is often used to relax the body and mind and is, therefore, more associated with night time use. It is thought to act as a sedative, relieve pain and stimulate the appetite although there is very little scientific research to back their cited effects.
Cannabis indica has a CBD to THC ratio close to 1:1, and the CBD content is generally higher than Sativa.
Cannabis Sativa
Sativa plants are characteristically tall and slim with skinny light green leaves. This strain originates in warmer climates including Central and South America, and Southeast Asia and usually contains more THC than CBD. Sativa is typically used in the day time as they are often associated with causing a stimulating effect in the user. Most people use Sativa for boosting energy, easing depression and increasing focus. Studies don’t necessarily support these claims as some Sativa plants can be energising, while others are not.
Hybrids
Found both in nature and in labs, there are many instances of hybrid forms of cannabis and every year; there are new, different strains being produced from various combinations of parent plants. The appearance of the hybrid strain depends on the parent plants used, and the ration of CBD to THC varies from to plant to plant for the same reason.
Hybrids are often bred in greenhouses for a specific purpose that can range from reducing anxiety to relieving symptoms of a painful health condition. They are usually classified as being Indica-dominant, Sativa-dominant or balanced.
Is it legal to purchase Cannabis or CBD Seeds UK?
The law is quite simple and self-explanatory, and it may come as a surprise to many, but cannabis seeds are legal to own, buy, sell and trade in the UK. You can buy seeds over the counter at some shops, and there are a number of online shops that will ship cannabis seeds to your door.
The issue comes in if you want to germinate seeds or grow cannabis. It’s therefore important to stay on the right side of the law; you can purchase cannabis seeds for legitimate reasons which include using cannabis seeds for bird food or fish bait, as collectors’ items or for general interest purposes. This makes it difficult for law enforcement to know what the intended purpose is for the seeds and if you are caught with seeds, you may need to go through a process of proving that they were not used for cultivation or consumption.#
These laws around cannabis seeds are lenient, which seems strange when compared to their strict stance on the use of cannabis.
Can I Grow Cannabis or CBD Seeds?
In the UK, it is still illegal to grow high-THC cannabis. It is classified as a Class B substance and possession can lead to arrest.
CBD is slightly different in that it is extracted from industrial hemp which has been grown in the UK for centuries (dating back to 1533, when it a law that farmers had to grow hemp on their farms). Unfortunately, in more recent times, it came to be (incorrectly) associated with cannabis strains that are high in the psychoactive cannabinoid THC. So, despite being legal, it is subject to strict regulatory oversight.
Hemp can be grown under license from the Home Office, but only the seeds and stalks can be harvested, the flowers need to be destroyed immediately and it remains illegal to grow hemp in your back garden. According to the Home Office, hemp growers are limited to using their crops for fibre and hemp seed oil production and are prevented from harvesting the flowers, extracting cannabinoids and creating CBD products. Their policy states that “licences may be issued for the cultivation of cannabis plants with a low tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content for the production of hemp fibre for industrial purposes or the obtaining of seeds which are then pressed for their oil. For both of these uses, licences are granted to enable the use of non-controlled parts of the plant (i.e. seeds and fibre/mature stalk only). This policy is only applicable where non-controlled parts of the plant are used and does not allow for use of ‘green’ material- i.e. the leaves and flowers as these are controlled parts of the plant.”
Importantly, this means that CBD products sold in the UK are all made from hemp produced in Europe and the United States. There is increasing pressure to open up restrictions as it would have a profound effect for hemp farmers in the UK, but at the moment all CBD is sourced from outside the UK’s borders.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
